A new president

Gaba apparently has a new president – Takayuki Masuda. Until last week he was the Vice President of Gaba. He comes from Nichii Gakkan, the new owners. Bruce Anderson lasted less than four months in the post of president. And there was no advance notice like there was when Bruce Anderson was to take over from Kenji Kamiyama back in December. It is far from clear what this means, but it is worth knowing, and the fact Gaba didn’t make any announcement at all so far to instructors is curious. I imagine it is the new owners more firmly taking control, but beyond that I don’t know.

Here is the Japanese press release from Gaba’s website with a rough translation. It is taken from http://www.gaba.co.jp/static/20120329.pdf

I heard that Bruce Anderson was going back to Canada for his family, dunno if I believe that. Makes me think of a thing I read when Aono “quit”:

Hands on CEO experience looking good on Chutatsu Aono’s CV

TOKYO, Japan (GTA) — After revising and printing out updated versions of his CV, Gaba CEO Chutatsu Aono announced that there was “nothing to worry about.”

Despite the recent economic troubles, Aono proceeded to note that his future was “very bright” and that he would likely “need to wear shades,” according to employees at a Shinjuku Kinko’s.

“Harvard Business School? Check. Four years at MicroSoft. My MBA. Sweet. Tell me honestly if you thing this sounds too corny, ‘Consistently took the initiative to extract the best possible performance out of each and every GABA associate?’ Seriously, does anyone think I’m going overboard here?”

Aono reportedly spent two hours deliberating with employees over the final revisions, in order to “polish that bad motha.”

“Should I spell out Chief Executive Officer, or should I just abbreviate it? It’s really difficult to get all this stuff onto one page. This could get out of hand if we’re not careful. Let’s take out captain of the Waseda Math-a-Maniacs and just leave in tennis club. Wait, I totally forgot about American Express.”

While speaking to part-time clerk Yotaro, Mr. Aono remarked that he may need more time to find himself and may take a year off to travel across Europe.

I’m surprised they didn’t inform us. Must be pushing out the GABA people. Maybe Nichii Gakan aren’t happy about the ridiculous fight they go into the union with – and lost! Might even join now……

They finally posted it on MGI yesterday –

Effective as of March 28 shareholders meeting, Gaba has appointed a new CEO, Takayuki Masuda. Prior to his appointment as the CEO, Mr. Masuda served as Gaba’s Vice President. Before joining Gaba he held a variety of management positions with in Nichii Gakkan

He has replaced Bruce Anderson as Gaba’s CEO, following Mr. Anderson’s decision to return to Canada after 11 plus years at Gaba.
